Capturing the Craft: Artisan Fans and Brand Photography in Honfleur, France
As a personal brand photographer, I’ve had the joy of travelling internationally to capture unique stories behind extraordinary businesses. My work took me to Honfleur, Normandy, a picturesque town steeped in history, where I had the privilege of photographing Ysabel, the proud owner behind Eventail Ysabel, a brand dedicated to crafting exquisite handmade fans,trained by one of the world’s master “éventaillistes”
Ysabel’s artistry reflects her passion for reviving the traditional craft of fan-making, a skill that dates back centuries in French culture. Her fans are not merely accessories but intricate works of art. Each piece showcases remarkable craftsmanship, from hand-painted motifs to delicately stitched fabrics. These fans recall a time when they symbolised elegance and sophistication in French society. Historically, fans were also used to convey messages through subtle movements, making them both beautiful and functional. Ysabel brings this cultural heritage into the modern world with every design.
Honfleur provided the perfect setting for this shoot. Its cobbled streets, charming harbour, and pastel-toned houses created an atmosphere that complemented the timeless elegance of Ysabel’s fans. It was a magical day, made even more special when I met her dog, Tess. To find out that we shared the same birthday as the day of the shoot added a personal touch to an already inspiring experience.
Ysabel’s dedication to her craft is evident in every detail of her fans. Whether incorporating intricate lace or bold designs, she ensures that no two fans are the same, offering her customers a truly bespoke experience.
